About
the Artist
A
collection of art work by Maureen Ottier. The scenes depicted are of the people and the lush tropical landscapes
of Trinidad and Tobago and other Caribbean islands .
Maureen Ottier began her career at the Imperial College of Tropical
Agriculture in her native Trinidad, as a scientific illustrator.
She worked in the advertising industry doing creative writing,
graphic art and client contacts for a number of years, and began
managing Moart her own art supply company while
she attended art courses at UWI Extra Mural Studies Unit. She
later opened Art Works gallery in the neighbouring island
of Barbados where
she showcased other Caribbean artists' as well as her own
work.
Maureen has designed and marketed her own line of greeting
cards and specializes in an exquisite range of miniatures. She
has been a contributing artist to the Naturalist Magazine and the annual Christmas card project of the Rotary
Club of Maraval.
Her work is also featured in the Guyana & Trinidad Mutual
Life Calendar 1975, the Women In Art catalogue and
the American Womens' Club art catalogue 1999.
From 1970 to the present Maureen Ottier has participated in numerous
mixed exhibitions, including the Trinidad Art Society Annual
November Exhibition and the Women in Art Annual Exhibition.
Her most recent solo exhibition was held at Art Creators gallery
in 1999 followed by Parallel Journeys, a joint exhibition
with water colourist, Jane Albert at 101 Art Gallery in
2002. She has received awards for excellence in painting from the
Trinidad Art Society in 1988 and for contribution to Art
in Barbados from the Barbados National Cultural Foundation in
1990.
Ottier now divides her time between painting and teaching in
her home studio far up one of the many lovely valleys of Northwestern
Trinidad, surrounded by the garden of fruit trees, plants and birds
which inspire much of her work. She continues to participate
in artist workshops both at home and abroad. Her
enduring love for nature and the out of doors keeps her actively
involved with the Trinidad Field Naturalist' Club which affords
her opportunities for working in remote and unspoilt areas of her
country.
A versatile artist, Maureen is equally at home in a variety
of media. She accepts commissions for portraits, drawings,
and paintings of homes, special places, and
other subjects, in oils, acrylic, watercolour, or pastels.
